Remember Cade's good friend, Madeleine? Her mom is running a half marathon in order to raise funds to find a cure for childhood cancer. We're leaving tomorrow for a little weekend getaway and I'm sure we'll have tons of photos to share when we get back. In the meantime I thought I would share this home video from last week. Charlie dog had a friend came stay the week with him and we got to love on Humphrey while his mom and dad were in Alaska. Here's a video we shot outside of the crazies running around with Cade. It's guaranteed to make you smile, laugh, giggle, crack up, and maybe even wet your pants. :) Make sure you watch the whole thing ... the funniest part is right at the end.

Celebration of Champions

This past Saturday our family participated in the 2009 Celebration of Champions. This is an annual celebration that helps raise money for the Hematology/Oncology unit at Children's Hospital. This was our first year participating and it was such a moving, emotion-filled day. It was amazing to see so many families gather together to celebrate the lives of their children. The day began at the Embarcadero and ended at the Padre Game where the kids got to go down on the field for a special pre-game ceremony. I really think this was one of the best days our family has ever had together. :)

These were our sponsors. Each child was sponsored by an individual or company and each sponsor gave a donation of at least $1500. I was blown away by the fact that complete strangers would sponsor Cade and donate money in his honor

This is Cade's buddy Madeleine. She is currently battling Neuroblastoma (the same cancer that Cade had) but she's a fighter and is going to beat this. We love Mad and her family (and their crazy basset hound, Humphrey who will be coming to stay with us this week ... I'm sure there will be blog posts about that soon. hahaha.)

The motorcycle cops did a lap to start things off. They had their sirens and lights on. I'm not sure who's idea that was but they need to be fired. Have you ever stood next to a police siren? It's enough to make you lose your hearing. A ton of kids started crying. Cade covered his ears and hid his head in Ryan's lap. Way to go motorcycle cops! You really know how to start a party! :P

This was the start/finish line for all of the "champions." Each child ran a lap with their sponsors and a celebrity while the crowd cheered for them.

There were also many families there who had lost a child to cancer. They each carried a white balloon and took a lap together. At the end of the lap they released their balloons signifying their child's release from this horrible disease.

This was our celebrity for the day. Chris Young, pitcher with the Padres. The guy is a beast. Let me remind you that Ryan is 6'3" and he looks like a shrimp standing next to Chris (yep, we're on a first name basis now.) He was seriously so nice and genuine. I think he might be my new favorite pitcher (just don't tell Jake Peavy.)

Cade was the first runner off the starting line so he got to wear the number 1. There are definitely many benefits to having a last name that starts with the letter A. :)

This is nurse Jeanie. She was the nurse who took the bone marrow from Cade's backside when we were in the hospital almost 2 years ago. She walked up to us and told us that she remembered him and that she was so glad he was doing well ... that my friends is the sign of an awesome nurse

Laces Out

There's one thing I've learned about living with a toddler. They get into absolutely everything! One of Cade's favorite things to raid is my prop closet. This is where I store all of my blankets, hats, tutus, and other props for my photography sessions. Cade just so happens to have an obsession with a certain purple tutu. I'm not sure if I should be worried about this or not. ;) Today he put the tutu on and was dancing around the house with a football. I couldn't help but notice the uncanny resemblance between Cade and Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura. See for yourself. I think he needs help. (Jim Carrey and Cade both.)

Yesterday I took Cade to the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. Cade had never been there before and now I'm wondering why we didn't take him there sooner. He loved it! He has always loved fish and water so he was completely mesmerized by everything. His favorite things to watch were the jelly fish, starfish, and sea horses. When we got home, Cade took an almost 3 hour nap! Maybe we should go to the aquarium every day. ;)

After Cade's nap we went outside and painted, flew a kite, and went swimming with Daddy. The weather has been a lot warmer lately and Cade thoroughly enjoys hanging out in the front yard with as little clothes on as humanly possible. I think he would live his life naked if we let him.

A Day at the Splash Park

Today we went to the Splash Park in Rancho San Diego with our cousins Lisa, Nick, and Natalie. We had TONS of fun and were both completely wiped out when we got home.

Cade Takes a Trip to Sonic

The very first Sonic opened in San Diego about a month ago and Cade (and mommy too!) were so excited to go check it out. I won't tell you that the lid on my cherry limeade wasn't on all the way and it spilled all over me and the car. I also won't tell you that the lid on Cade's apple juice wasn't on all the way and it spill all over him and the car as well. Because despite both of us being soaked we still had a rockin' good time. :)

Cade is getting so smart these days. He knows most of his alphabet. And yes ... there is a part towards the end where I ask him "what letter starts with P?" I meant to ask what word starts with P. Apparently, he's even smarter than I am. :) (Please pardon the naked parts, hahaha.)

A Shout Out to Uncle Theo and Mimi

Cade's Godparents (also known as Uncle Theo and Mimi) sent Cade some super fun bubbles in the mail. He LOVED them and, as you can see, had a blast blowing bubbles all on his own. I put them up on our kitchen counter and he keeps dragging a chair over so he can reach them. Thank you Eddie and Heather!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eddie and Ryan always joke that Cade is like Frankenstein from the Adam Sandler movie Big Daddy. Frankenstein is the little boy that Adam Sandler "adopts" and it's a cute story of how the two "grow up" together. One of the scenes involves Adam Sandler feeding Frankenstein ketchup for lunch. I thought of Eddie today as Cade consumed all of the ketchup on my plate while we were waiting for our corn dogs to cook. :)

Family Traditions

My family has so many fun traditions. For example, every gathering *has* to include a cheeseball, a bowl of peanut m&m's, chips and dip, and cheese potatoes. Oh yes, and if there is ever a cake involved it HAS to come from "The Grove" ... anything else is just unacceptable.

Although these traditions are things that I sometimes chuckle at, I have to admit that I love them ... every last one of them.

One big tradition in my family is the annual Cookie Bake. We have been doing this almost my entire life and it's something I look forward to every year. I thought I would get you all in the holiday mood and share some photos from tonight's festivities.

There's a Fireman in the House

Cade celebrated his 2nd birthday last weekend and one of the gifts he received was his very first Power Wheels vehicle. He loves firetrucks so Grandma and Papa Albert bought him this DRIVEABLE (watch out world!) firetruck. We took it out for a spin a few days ago and as you can see from Cade's face, the boy loves it!

A Summary of the Past Few Months

Here is a quick summary of what has happened in the Albert family over the past few months. Sarah survived the busy holiday season with her photography business and has not had a lot of down time until now. So here are some photos of the past few months to get you all caught up. (And there should be *plenty* of time for blogging now that the new year is approaching.)

In September we celebrated the one year mark of Cade being cancer free. We had a party with our friends and family and raised money for Children's Hospital in San Diego as well as the Neuroblastoma Society. Cade helped me make the cupcakes for the party ... although he did more eating than helping. :)

In October we had fun with all of the Halloween festivities. Cade was a train conductor for Halloween (although his Uncle Ian would argue that he was a train engineer ... I think conductor sounds cuter though.) We had fun trick or treating for the first time this year. Cade was really funny and would sit down on the lawn after every house and check out his candy. He really liked this whole Halloween thing.

In October Cade and I also took a trip to Austin, Texas to visit our friends. Ryan went on a 2 week trip to Greece with his dad, so Cade and I decided we should have some fun too.

We stayed the week with my good friend, Rachel, and Cade's buddy, Griffin. We visited quite a few creek beds while we were there so the boys could have fun and run around. Although looking back at these photos now ... the water looked a little green. hahaha. Oh well, nothing has happened to them yet. I will let you know if Cade or Griffin grow an extra arm or anything.

Remember this photo from our last trip to Austin in May? Look who has grown since then!

In November, Grandma and Grandpa Mackland took us to Perris, CA for a Day Out with Thomas the Train. Cade LOVED Thomas. He had a blast, although he had his "serious" face on the whole day.

In November we also celebrated Thanksgiving. Cade had a great time playing with his cousins. The funnest part of the day for him was when his cousins showed how how to play bowling on the Wii. He thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Growing Up WAY Too Fast

Just this morning I was thinking about how I would *eventually* transition Cade into a big boy bed. I figured I would first remove the crib bumpers and get him used to that. Then maybe I would remove one side of the crib and see how he did with that. And then some day ... in the FAR future ... we would buy him a big boy bed and everything would be great. I was thinking Cade would probably be close to 3 before we got rid of the crib.

Well ... a certain someone had other plans in mind. This afternoon Cade climbed out of his crib 4 times!!!! I put him down for his nap and about 10 minutes later I heard him at his bedroom door. It totally freaked me out. When he woke up from his nap he climbed out again. So, Ryan lowered the mattress as far as it could go and we took the bumpers out. Then we put Cade in it to see what he would do. The kid did not even skip a beat. As soon as we put him in there he hoisted himself up and shimmied down the side of the crib. So much for waiting until he's 3.

So, off we went to Babies R Us. We picked out a bed and Cade picked out the bedding he wanted. Then we came home and Cade helped Ryan put the bed together. He was so excited about his "big boy" bed. Tonight, at bedtime, we read our books, said our prayers, then Cade went to sleep in his new bed without a fuss. I have no idea what the next few weeks are going to hold for us but I'm sure it will be a bit of an adventure. Our son is on the loose! He's no longer contained. Scary thought. hahaha.

So, lots of prayers would be great. Pray that Cade does well in his new bed and that he doesn't fall out of it. And pray for mom too ... I'm having an emotional meltdown. How can it be that my little guy is growing up so fast?

A Future Guitar Player?

Every night Cade insists that Ryan plays the guitar for him. He tries to make me play the guitar for him during the day and gets really mad when I tell him I don't play the guitar. So, Grandma decided that Cade needed a guitar of his own. Here's a video of him showing of his great guitar playing skills. :)

Guess Who Used the Big Boy Potty?

And no, it isn't Ryan. hahaha.

Cade used the big boy potty today for the first time!!!! We have had this little toilet in the house for a couple months now and up until today Cade has just tipped it over and pushed the buttons to play music (it's supposed to play music when your child goes pee ... the things they think of today. :)) So, this afternoon I was changing Cade's diaper and he didn't want me to put another diaper on. I said, "what are you going to do if you have to go pee pee?" He then pointed to the bathroom. So I said, "Do you need to go potty?" He shook his head yes, jumped up and walked into the bathroom. Just like the confident little man that he is, he sat down on the little toilet and knew just what to do. I told him I would give him some privacy and I walked out so he couldn't see me. Within 10 seconds of walking out of the bathroom I heard the music start playing. He peed!!!!! In the big boy potty!!!!!! We danced around and I gave him a special treat.

I can't believe my little man is growing up so fast. I don't think he's anywhere close to being potty trained but I'm so excited that he gets the idea. He's so smart. :)

We have a video monitor that allows us to watch Cade in his crib (welcome to the high tech world of parenthood, hahaha.) Cade always cracks me up when he's going to sleep, so tonight I took some pictures of him on the monitor. Sometimes I think he knows we're watching him. :)

Hospital Day

Today Cade had his monthly check up at Children's Hospital. The great news is that instead of having a CT scan, Dr. Willert said he could just have an ultrasound this time around because he has been doing so well. Yay! Our visits to Children's are always really hard because it brings back so many memories. My heart sinks every time we see the other children at the Oncology clinic who are going through chemotherapy and radiation. Such awesome, strong families. So, I thought I would document some of the more comical times we have at the hospital. We try to make it as light and fun as possible for Cade. :)

Some New Glass

I got a new lens today and had to test it out on the kiddos (i.e. Caedmon and Charlie.) As a side note ... I would just like to say that as I type this Cade is sitting on the couch ... naked ... eating a popsicle. He cracks me up.

Cade LOVES Charlie ... thankfully Charlie is pretty lazy and doesn't mind having a toddler climb on him and hug him all the time. :)

An Early Morning Visitor

This morning I went into the kitchen to make Cade some breakfast. I glanced out the window and saw some sort of animal moving. I thought it was probably a dog, but when I looked closer this is what I saw staring back at me:

A goat!!!! Cade thought it was hysterical. He tried to feed it his English Muffin through the window. The goat's owner came a few minutes later and put a leash on it and took it home. This my friends is proof that we live in the middle of nowhere. :)

Fruit Thief

When you have a toddler in the house, the only time silence is good is when they are sleeping. If your toddler is running around then suddenly becomes silent, you know they are up to something. Cade loves to climb up onto the chairs and steal the fruit out of our fruit bowl. He's our little fruit thief. Today, I was talking on the phone and realized Cade was very quiet. I hung up the phone and this is what I found ... the fruit thief in action!!! Stay tuned for part two of "when the house is too quiet." It involves a naked toddler, the dog door, and the backyard. There's never a dull moment in our house! :)

4th of July Weekend

What a busy weekend we had! We celebrated 4th of July which just so happens to be Ryan's birthday as well. We had a lot of fun hanging out with our families and just relaxing (hahaha, yeah right ... with a toddler???) Here are a few pics from this weekend. The rest can be found here.

So, usually Cade is asleep by 7pm each night. For the 4th of July we thought it would be fun to keep him up late to see the fireworks. We gave him his bath, put his jammies on, went out onto the deck and got all cozy in our chairs. The fireworks started and it went a little something like this:

Mommy: Cade, do you see the fireworks? Aren't they beautiful?
Cade: Mmmhhhmmmm (nods his head yes)
Mommy: Wow! Did you see that one?
Cade: silence
Mommy: Cade?
Cade: silence
Mommy: Cade?
Cade: silence
Mommy: Ryan, is Cade asleep?
Daddy: Yep, sure is.

So, after working so hard to keep him up late for the fireworks, Cade fell asleep after about 3 minutes of watching them. I do have to admit though ... it was one of the happiest moments of my life sitting on the deck, rocking my son while he slept peacefully in my arms, and holding my husband's hand. What more could you ask for?

The Fairest of the Fair

Today Cade experienced the San Diego County Fair for the very first time. Cade loved all the farm animals, and especially enjoyed a yummy corn dog and lemonade. The funnest part of his day though was when he spent 20 minutes running up and down a ramp in the flower display area ... I'm not even kidding. hahaha.

The Difference a Year Makes ... Part 2

A few days ago I posted pictures of Cade at a Padre game from last year. This afternoon we went swimming at Grandma and Papa Albert's house and it made me think again about how much Cade has changed in the last year. Someone tell this kid to slow down! :)

I highly recommend them to anyone thinking of switching. The brand we went with is Happy Heiny's. They are super easy and Cade really likes them. The best part is we're saving a lot of money and helping the environment be a little bit cleaner. And did I mention how cute they are? :)

The Difference a Year Makes

I can't believe how much has changed in a year. Cade went to see the Padres play ball today and it was his first ballgame since May of last year. I couldn't get over how different things were compared to the last time we were there.

So much has changed in the last year. Our little boy has grown from a baby into a toddler and it's all going so fast. One thing I've learned over the past year is to enjoy every second of life and never take anything for granted. I'm looking forward to many more family days at the ballpark. :)

Caedmon and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week

Cade has had a rough week. He came down with some virus that the doctor suspects is Roseola. Needless to say, things have been a little miserable around the house. Cade's days have gone something like this:

6am: wake up and cry
6:30am: watch tv for 5 minutes then throw a fit because you want something else on
7am: refuse to eat breakfast
7:30am: cry because you want to go outside
8am: cry because the snack mommy made you just isn't good enough
8:30am: watch tv for 5 minutes then throw a fit because you want something else on
9am: cry for no reason
9:30am: mommy cries

I think you get the picture.

Trains and Rudy's

We had so much fun in Austin. There are quite a few photos to share so we're going to break them up in a few different posts.

This is Cade with his buddy Griffin at the Cedar Rock Railroad. They both showed up wearing plaid overalls, polo shirts, and sandals. Griffin's mom, Rachel, and I always joke that Cade and Griffin are twins ... this cracked us up when they showed up dressed like each other.

Cade and Griffin also enjoyed some delicious bbq at Rudy's. The twin madness continued.

A Future Musician

We had the chance to visit our good friends, Toby and Shelly Walters. Toby is an old high school friend and is a musician. They have a recording studio in their home and Cade just HAD to test it out. Of course there's no better way to make music than in your skivies!

This is Merry. She and Charlie were great friends before the Walter's moved away. Cade gave her a big hug from Charlie.

After dinner we went outside and the neighbor kids were playing in the front of their house. The parents invited Cade to come over and play too ... so much hospitality in Texas

Yes, we let Cade play on the train tracks. :) It seems like there are train tracks everywhere you look in Austin ... something you don't see in San Diego.

The boys were dirrrrrrty after playing outside, so we plopped them both in the tub. These are definite future blackmail pictures. :)

Fun in the Sun

It was hot hot hot during our trip. We still managed to have plenty of fun in the sun though.

This was a waterpark in Leander, down the street from Eddie and Heather's house (Cade's godparents)

This was at a park in Eddie and Heather's neighborhood. It had a cool lake, a playground, and plenty of grass for Cade to run around in. It was beautiful!

Churches, Cemeteries, and St. Francis

My good friend, Rachel (aka Griffin's mom), is also a photographer. We took the boys out for an impromptu photoshoot and found a couple of really cool churches, and one just so happened to also have a cemetery ... creepy!

At one of the churches there was a statue of St. Francis. Cade disappeared around the corner and when I went to go find him, he was in the garden having a conversation with the statue.

Sorry for the lack of posting this past week. We're in Austin, Texas at the moment and haven't had much time to post. We fly back home on Saturday though, so be prepared for LOTS of pictures. We're having a great time and Caedmon is enjoying hanging out with his buddy, Griffin. He is also enjoying lots of bbq, queso (something we don't find very often in San Diego), and cherry limeades from Sonic. Yum-o!

Adventures at the Zoo

Today Cade and I went to the zoo with a neighbor friend of ours. Cade had so much fun running around and checking out all the animals. It's a good thing we have annual passes and can go to the zoo anytime we want to. :)

Caedmon loves loves loves his bath time! Recently he has started "swimming" in the bath tub. He will lay on his belly and kick his legs and splash around. It's the cutest thing ever. I think he was a fish in his former life.

Cade is growing way too fast. We took him to get some new shoes today because he already outgrew the shoes we bought him a couple months ago. So, today Cade got his first pair of Nike's. Size 6!!!! We came home and had to test them out in the front yard.

Comfort Food

Uncle Darryl and Aunt Dee sent Cade a card and his very first McDonald's gift certificates. They said he needed a little comfort food since he did such a good job with his CT scan last week. Cade was very excited about this and had so much fun at McDonald's this afternoon. He had a yummy Oreo McFlurry and an order of french fries. Mommy and Daddy helped him of course. Thank you Uncle Darryl and Aunt Dee for this special treat!
